Points system
« on: July 24, 2008, 16:26:32 PM »
Now then, this post may sound like sour grapes, but it isn"t meant to, in the interest of fairness I am just suggesting that changes ought to be made for season 3.
When the last rankings were posted by John, I did what every body does and looks to find their name and see where I finished in the table. So I was pretty pleased to see that I had finished 9th in the North with two final table finishes, I then promptly forgot all about it!
Then the other day a post featured the rankings table again and I had another look at it, and noticed that Morlspin 2 and GiMac 1, both got to 5 final tables!!! Now I don"t know either Graeme or Gordon, but they are both obviously very accomplished players. My question is, where did they play their regionals? And how many players attend those regionals?
I would suspect (and again I reiterate I don"t want to sound a miserable git) that the numbers in these particular regionals are low, as to beat a large field to 5 final tables is nigh on amazing.
So my point is, in Manchester there are normally between 60 and 80 people at every event, to battle through this field is surely a bigger achievement than to win through a field of 15. There fore shouldn"t the points awarded be in direct correllation with the number of entrants? The same way that National places are awarded. I know some might say "But I can only get to ...... and they only get 15 entrants" the thing being in this case the more final tables at lower points would equate to lesser final table at larger events.
Surely this would result in a fairer represenation of everybodies achievements.
I must stress guys that I am not having a dig at anybody, I think all the work that the APAT team put in is terrific, all I am saying is that there must be a fairer way of points scoring.
What do the rest of you think?

I think it"s a very fair point, and well made.

I was going to reply to this earlier, but was waiting on Des to post first.APAT alway"s have their ears to the ground and alway"s listen to feedback.I kinda guessed that season 3 would be re-structred to take into account some low turnouts in the North east and South West.

It was getting that bad the weekend Graham and Gordon were both trying to buy beers with APAT medals, they had that many in their pockets!! ;)

I pretty much agree with everything you posted mikeyboy.

What I would say though; if the points system was changed then Gordon and Graeme would have next to no chance of winning a regional title, purely because they play in small fields, and that is not their fault.

On another thread, I have suggested that points be allocated based on a formula that uses number of runners and the size of the buy in. This is similar to the method that works out the UK rankings printed in PP mag.

I"m sure there are plenty of counter arguments to this as well.

Of course it"s their fault. How stupid to try and play poker in a small field - they should try playing in a casino instead!!   ;D

Phew!! I am glad you all agree, I thought I was being controversial there for a minute. I should have known Des would be on the ball!
And the field joke me chuckle.

After reading through the comments I have to say im 50/50 over the idea of reducing points or changing the formats too much. However, a formula that even"s the scoring out would be a good idea, cos to be honest, it feels like the hard work i put in to win the Northern Regionals has been undermined by the numbers we had.

I had numerous people coming up to me in Blackpool and saying well done on winning the regionals (even people i didnt know) but it was usually followed up with..."they were only sit and goes tho" or "you made the final table by sitting out" which was funny at 1st, but then got me thinking was it all worth the effort?

Leg 1 had 24 and took 6hrs to play
Leg 2 had 18 and took 5hrs to play
Leg 3 had 16 and took 5hrs to play
Leg 4 had 15 and took 4hrs30 to play
Leg 5 had 11 and took 5hrs to play

The amount of players we had at the regionals in Newcastle were low, undoubtedly, but if your putting a £20 freezeout up against a Newcastle Vs Sunderland derby, The Grand National and FA Cup semi finals, then your gonna get less runners anyway up here, with the majority of poker players being sports fans.

As Swinebag says, its all well and good changing the rules and making it fairer to everyone re numbers over points, but dont do it so that the smaller fields wont even have a chance.

Absolutely right, the trick is to find the middle ground and not unduly penalise those who attend the busiest or least busy venues.  You are a worthy champ Graeme, and smaller fields ensured you were always likely to be playing with strong players like GiMac, so well done for consistently getting the job done.
