Wales Continue To Narrow Gap On Scotland
By · Comments
Last night saw the completion of the tenth round of the PokerStars.com National Online League from APAT, where a field of over two hundred players assembled to compete for the thirteen participating regions.
The trend in recent weeks has seen Wales close the gap to long time leaders Scotland, and that trend continued again last night as the Welsh took another point out of the Scottish lead. The Scots, to their credit, are mighty fighters and they managed to get an impressive four players into the last fifteen last night, to score four match points and take second position on the night.
But it was the Welsh who again took the maximum five, with a star turn from Rhys Langley, winning his second individual league event in the past three weeks, a very impressive performance indeed. Scottish player Tom Hall took the individual second with Ricky Jones once again going deep, taking third following his individual win in last week’s fixture.
Elsewhere on the night, it was the North East who secured three match points, thanks to Dan Patterson’s individual fourth place finish. West Midlands took two match points, with the North West scoring the final match point.
So with one third of the league remaining, Wales have cut the Scottish region’s lead to a mere two points, while West Midlands continue to lead the chasing group.
Match day 11 will take place next Sunday night at 7pm. Click the PokerStars.com National Online League button (above right) to learn how to get involved and play for your region.

Wales narrowed the gap to leaders Scotland in the 6th match of the PokerStars.com National Online League, from APAT.
It was Welsh player Stephen Morris who took the individual win beating Europe’s Gina Weiss heads up. Zoe Orton-Jay also reached the final table, finishing 6th, to help Wales to 5 match points.
Scotland took 4 match points, with Ross McWilliams finishing 4th and Charlie Kearns finishing 9th to maintain Scotland’s strong showing in the league so far.
South East took 3 match points helped by Tony Johnson’s 5th place. North East took 2 match points thanks to the 13th, 14th and 15th place finishes of Trevor Roberts, William Greenwood and Ross Johnson.
Weiss’ second place was enough to deliver the European region’s first match point of their campaign.
Match 7 will take place next Sunday night at 7pm.
The Easter bank holiday weekend brought 165 of the UK’s finest amateur poker players to the G Casino in Coventry for the William Hill English Amateur Poker Championship, the first stop in APAT’s sixth season.
Amongst the 165 competing players was defending Champion Mark Briggs, who fell midway through day 1 and several past National Amateur Champions, including season one legends Daniel Phillips (2006 English Amateur Champion), Lee Mulligan (2007 Welsh Amateur Champion) and Mark Donnelly, who had finished runner up to both Phillips and Mulligan in those events.
For their £75.00 + £7.50 buy in, players started the event with 15,000 chips on a generous 45 minute clock.
Day one brought 13 levels, at which point the field had been whittled down to 34 players. The aforementioned Phillips had exited play late on day 1, but both Donnelly and Mulligan had fought through an incredibly tough field to top and tail the first day’s chip counts. Also through were past APAT Champions Charles Mason, Tim Magnus, Andy Kingan, Paul McGuiness and Warren Jones, who won a £20,000 sponsorship package as APAT player of the season in 2010. Amongst other developing stories, was the potential first of brothers making the Championship final table, as Midland players Joey and Ant Williams had both made day two.
Scotland Win Fifth Match In National Online League

With day 2 of the William Hill English Amateur Championship going on in Coventry, it was a reduced field of 212 that took to the virtual felt in match 5 of the PokerStars.com National Online League.
The final table bubble was burst after four and a half hours, with two players going out, resulting in a final table of 8 players:
Walwyn 165k (Yorkshire and Humber)
Hindustani 156k (Scotland)
hongkongpoo 130k (Scotland)
Jables91 112k (Scotland)
33teetwo33 90k (Wales)
Yorksh1rePud 83k (Yorkshire and Humber)
flowquietly 58k (Wales)
camking 52k (East of England)
With three players from Scotland, and two from Wales (with three more Welsh players already in the points), these two teams were the favourites to take the top two spots.
The two Yorkshire and Humber players at the final table had to settle for a third place finish for the team, and 3 match points.
After flowquietly exited in 7th, Scotland were now in the driving seat and would go on to take maximumm match points, with Wales finishing in second place.
The individual win, however, was still up for grabs, with no one player having a substantial chip lead.
After a flurry of activity, we soon had a heads up battle between Walwyn (Andy Cowl) and 33teetwo33 (Steve Roderick), with Steve running out the eventual winner.
